The wealthiest of Caribbean countries, The Bahamas gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1973. Tourism is responsible for more than half of The Bahamas’ GDP and combined with construction, employs more than half of its labor force. Financial services are the second most important source of income for the Bahamas with offshore banking being the most popular. The official language is English and the official currency is the Bahamian dollar which is pegged to the U.S. dollar at an exchange rate of US$1=B$1. The Bahamas is considered one of the safest investments.
